Five questions to ask before you choose an academy

How many students in a class, who teaches, whether there is a live model: the answers that separate a course from a certificate.

A permanent makeup course is an investment of time, of trust and of craft. Before you choose where to take one, there are five questions worth asking any academy, ours included.

How many students are in the class?

It is the question that tells you most. In a large class you watch; in a small one you are corrected. Ours has three or four students per course.

Who teaches, and do they still work on clients?

A technique is best taught by someone who performs it every week. Ask who will be in the room, and whether they still practise.

Will you work on a live model?

Synthetic skin teaches the gesture; real skin teaches the craft. Ask whether the course includes a live model, and under what supervision.

What happens after the course?

The real questions arrive with your first pieces of work on your own. Ask whether you can still talk to the person who trained you, and how.

What do you receive at the end?

Ask which certificate you will receive and what it certifies, and whether the professional kit is included or available on request. Better to know before than to find out after.
